  1. Open mic at Luckey’s is for standup only, no poetry or music. Parking is on the street, but as late as the room starts, it is free. Signup is first come first choice, and there are no language restrictions, but the person who runs the room, Chaz, said don’t use the “N” word or any hate. I was amazed he felt the need to say that, and I inquired further. Evidently some comedians, maybe for shock value or something, have been using awful words even after the host has said not to. I was dumbfounded. Those comedians, by the way, are going nowhere in the comedy world. Or life. Just a personal observation.
Talent gets five minutes. Chaz has been running the room for a year and a half. The stage is quite nice and well lit. The room seats about 28 who can see the stage well. Open mic takes place separate from the bar, so there are no distractions. Anyone in the room is there for the mic. There are three pool tables nearby, but no one was playing that night, as well as one pinball machine. But, again, no one was playing. The bar sells $5 pints, so maybe come with a thirst. Everyone else was drinking.
We arrived 9:20pm, and we were the first ones there for comedy. The signup sheet came out 9:30pm. We had six signups by 10pm. In the room we had 14 people when the mic started at 10:13pm. Only ten minutes later attendance had increased to 19. Chaz opened with more than five then brought up the first talent. The whole evening went well, the host bringing up comic after comic. No one abused their stage time by going grossly over, and no one had anything nasty to say. Those in the room I saw were all paying attention, and if they heard something funny, they laughed and even offered up an applause break or two here and there. In summary, this is a very supportive room. The whole evening ended about midnight.
Guys, this is a good room to do. Chaz is a good host, and the fact that the room is a year and a half old tells me he’s doing something right. This room will grow, I am confident, in the comedy community. Admittedly, attendance does go down as the evening went on, about nine people by 11:35pm. Just get there about the time we did and take an earlier spot. That it’s geared only towards comedy makes the room run smooth: no musicians setting up or tuning instruments. Just a barrage of comedic talent one after the other. The evening goes by faster than you think. At Luckey’s, midnight doesn’t seem that late.
