  1. The current producer and host of the open mic at Timewarp is Roland, and he has been doing it for six months, but the room itself has been going on for over a year. It is predominantly for standup, but an occasional musician has ventured into the room and performed. Talent gets eight minutes on stage, and there are no language restrictions. Signup is first come first choice, and there is a $5 admission. You do, however, get one drink, and they even offer small bottles of beer. Otherwise, it’s BYOB. The host also offers complimentary eats like crackers and fruit. I thought that was considerate.
The business is a record store. The place sells LPs, CDs and tapes. For the open mic, a number of collapsible chairs are set up, along with other furniture – adding up to 23 seats -- all facing the stage, which is a nice stage found in the back of the room. The lighting is good for comedy, and had everything a comedian needs: mic, stand and stool. Parking is on the street, but it is free.
I arrived 10pm to support the booked show that takes place before the open mic. When I arrived, the signup sheet was already out. I was the first one there. I met the producer and paid my $5 admission and took the second spot. I held off on a drink till after my set. I sat and watched the remainder of the booked show, which ended about 10:45pm. By 11pm, I was still the only signup. I was ready to go up and perform for the producer only, but he managed to persuade three comedians from the booked show to stay and support. I did maybe six minutes and got myself off. Surprisingly, I got laughs, which made me feel good, and the host came up afterwards and asked to book me for the next show in September, which I said yes to.
Guys, this has the potential to be a very good room. There are no distractions in the room, not even the overhead fans blowing to keep the room cool. Everyone present is there for the mic, so you know you have a supportive audience. Roland is a very good guy, and he wants talent to have a good time. This room could easily be the third mic to do on a Thursday night, as late as it takes place, and eight minutes is a good amount of time for Los Angeles. Plus, like what happened to me, you might even get booked for the main show.
This room is still new. It only takes place once a month. Roland has only produced six shows. I hope this room finds an audience.
Of note: the night I performed was the last night this room takes place on a Thursday. Beginning Sept., 2018, shows will happen on Wednesdays. Same time.
