  1. While open mic started some months ago, there was a bit of a hiatus, and now the current producer, Peter, had his second mic the day I did his room.
Signup is first come first choice. When the signup sheet came out at 5pm, four people immediately put their names down. There are no language restrictions. Talent gets four minutes. I took the fifth spot. Open mic is for comedy only.
Open mic takes place outside in the patio area, which seats about 36. A single mic and stand is set up to one corner. Tomato Pie has a limited parking lot, but talent is discouraged from parking there, that they should park on the street. The business obviously sells pizza, but they also offer pastas, which I took advantage of, and some other items, including soup. The place does not serve beer, but I learned from the staff you can bring your own booze to the mic.
Peter started the room at 5:32pm. There were seven people in the audience. Two additional peeps showed up during the first talent’s set. By the second comic we had 11 in the patio. When I went up fifth I played to ten people. We had ten signups total. At 6:15pm we had a very late eleventh signup. He played to six peeps; the comic before him played to eight. The evening ended at 6:21pm, though it can go to 7pm.
I sat farthest from the mic, which allowed me to survey the audience. During the course of the evening I noticed not much enthusiasm for the room. Maybe three or four people applauded for talent. Some people didn’t watch the talent, nor look at their phones, just stared at the wall or a plant or something, like they were waiting for grim death. The best joke of the night did not get much response from the room.
Guys, I don’t know what to think. Maybe this was an isolated incident, that the room on any other week would be more vibrant. Peter made a noble attempt, opening the room with a few minutes of comedy, but the room never took off. Even with only four minutes of stage time, one or two comics got themselves off early. Admittedly, this was only the second time Peter ran his show. Maybe as people discover this room, new talent will show up and infuse some vigor into the room while on stage.
