Open mic at Jackpot has been going on less than a year, starting in October of 2017. The venue is mostly a floor for comedy, but they have had poetry before, and all genres of talent are welcome. Jackpot is a full bar but they also serve 24 breakfast, salads, appetizers, burgers, pizza, sandwiches and entrees like chicken Alfredo, salmon and fish and chips. Definitely a place you can do dinner and a show. Parking is in their lot. Spiro is the gentleman who runs the room, and a great room it is. Standup takes place in a room separate from where the bar and dining takes place. The room is designed for entertainment, with a nice stage that is well lit, and all the seats are arranged to face the stage. Three giant TVs are the backdrop to the stage, each TV purporting the “Jackpot Comedy Show” logo. The room seats about 68. The signup sheet came out 8:32pm. It’s first come first choice; however, it’s not on the Honor System. Talent who showed up after others were already there had no problem signing themselves first. Talent gets five minutes, and there are no language restrictions. If the turnout is low, talent gets seven minutes. The room goes till 11, 11:15pm, but it has gone as late as 11:30. There were 16 signups before 9pm. The room intentionally started late, 9:10pm. While there were 16 signups, only 12 people were in the room when we began. That increased to 17 by the second comedian. The night I performed we got seven minutes. Also, the open mic is a competition, where the talent votes on the winner, and that person receives $50. Sadly, I had to leave early, as I was the wheels for another comedian, and we were trying to hit a second room. I performed first, right after the emcee welcomed everyone and opened with a few minutes themselves. The rule is, if you’re not in attendance when the time to vote comes, you are disqualified. Not that I was going to win. We left after the third comedian, and he got more laughs than I did. Guys, this is a good room. Everything about it shouts standup. The sound system, the seating, the lights, it all works in favor of comedy. Bring your camera. This is one to record your set visually, not just orally.
