  1. While open mic starts 10:30pm, up to 10pm the café serves appetizers, salads, burgers and all-day breakfast. Thankfully, the bar stays open till they close. Equally thankful is that open mic takes place in a separate room than where the bar and one TV are. You definitely know the people in the room are there for the mic, and the distractions of other people talking are not a problem. Parking is on the street. Noteworthy is the artwork on the wall in that room. It may inspire you to take some photos.
Run by Austin Kain for just one month as of this writing, this room has so much to offer. Separate from the aforementioned, this room has a platform stage, the room seats about 23, and everyone can see the talent easily. Since this room is for comedy only, the only thing on stage was a mic and stand.
Signup is first come first choice. The signup sheet came out 10pm, and three comedians signed up before me. I ended up with the fourth spot by default, the previous signups taking spots one through three. There are no language restrictions, and talent gets four or five minutes.
We started the room late, hoping there would be a higher turnout. As it was when we started at 10:50pm, there were seven people in the room, including our host. In as much as we were all comedians, up till the room began we engaged in shop talk, learning about each other, and cracking a few jokes. Austin opened with a few and then brought up the talent one after the other. I went up last, and that would have concluded the evening had someone who was watching this whole time decided to make his standup comedy debut at Café Racer. (Earlier in the evening I was encouraging him to go up when I learned he was not planning to.) But this gentleman felt comfortable in the room and the peeps occupying its space that he felt motivated to make this his first night of standup.
Guys, I foresee this room being a hot spot. Yes, the night I was there the turnout was not high. I performed for five people. But this room is still embryonic. Comedians haven’t yet learned it is a viable room. Austin runs a second room, and from what he tells me, unless he chooses to stop producing these venues, these open mics are going to continue. As supportive as this room was, the communing we did, and as ideal as conditions are for performing in an open mic, this room should – and will – be getting the attention it deserves. As late as it starts, Café Racer can be the third mic you do in one night, so cap the evening off with this triple header.
Austin is a guy who cares about comedy, and this room deserves recognition for what it is.
