  1. Mystic Water shares a giant parking lot with other businesses, but there’s plenty and it’s free. Inside Mystic Water, the place seats about 24 who can see the stage area well. There is no stage. A mic is set up to one corner of the room but in the center of the place. The backdrop is a colorful mural and a papier mache-like tree but stronger. The business is all about kava, something I had never had before. You must purchase one item to perform. I ordered a double shot of kava and that ran $13. If you come as a group you can order their giant bowls that serve four easily.
The room has been going on two years. All genres of talent are welcome. Signup is first come first choice. The signup sheet came out at 7:35pm. Talent gets ten minutes. There are no language restrictions. The room can go to as late as midnight. Stephanie runs the bar, and the gentleman who runs the room is Joe.
The evening started at 9:06pm. We had 15 people total in the room, including staff and host. Joe opened with a few songs and seventeen minutes later I went up first. Attendance got better, as I played to 19 people in the room, but only 15 were watching. Some people sat where you can not see the talent. But for those who were watching, I did very well. One woman came up to me later in the evening, just before she left, and said how much she enjoyed my set. But that was later in the evening. Attendance increased some at 10:05pm with 22 in the room, and I counted 25 when I left at 10:40pm.
Evidently, standup isn’t done much here. Joe introduced me as a treat for this room, which translated they are not used to standup. The talent that followed me was a guitarist/singer and then a poet. That the room continued to have such high attendance tells you the energy stays high and supportive. The focus is on the talent for those who are choosing to participate in the mic, either to perform or watch. For the whole evening there were always people sitting at the tables not visible to the performers.
Guys, this is a good room to do. Joe gave me the index finger at one minute, and I was able to finish my act without a hitch. The room is quite supportive. The audience was supportive all night long. The energy is not just abundant but very positive. Maybe it’s the kava? But I recommend doing this room when you want to perform for an intimate crowd and do a solid ten or try out that much in new material. The audience is not a roomful of comics waiting their turn. It’s a general one, not to be too specific.
