  1. Open mic at Keyboard takes place the first Tuesday of every month, and it is open to all genres of talent. That said, this room mostly draws musicians. A comedian will pop in once in a while. The business is a music store, selling instruments and teaching classes, so there is no food or drinks sold there. The mic takes place in a room separate from where you buy and inspect all the instruments the business has no display. Inside the room, a platform stage that held four mics, a drum set and a keyboard, along with three stools. The room sat 44, all chairs facing the stage. Parking is in a lot and there is plenty.
Talent can sign up as early as a week before the venue starts. Mostly, though, talent phones in their request the day of or day before, like I did. All signups go up.
A gentleman named Dennis runs the room and has been for five years. I learned from Dennis that there are language restrictions if a child is in the room. If there are no children, then “read the room” and use your discretion.
We had six people in the room when we started at 7:05pm. On a good night, they can get 15 signups. Dennis took roll call, making sure everyone who phoned in their request was present. Talent was offered two songs because of the slight turnout. I noticed the lighting on stage was overhead. Talent was already in shadow a little. Don’t wear a hat, lest you’re inviting a disconnect.
I ended up going up third. One audience member told me afterwards she thought I went up there to sing, that she wasn’t prepared for standup. Well, it worked out well. I killed in that room, even though the audience was not so large. We had nine people in the room at 7:42pm, and it peaked at 11 at 7:50pm.
After everyone had their turn, Dennis opened up the room to a second round, which several of the talent took advantage of, going up again in the same order as the first round. The evening ended at 8:04pm.
Guys, this is a very good room to do. Those attending, however few, appreciated comedy so much. Dennis is a good host, and even without music playing talent on and off, he keeps the room moving along, announcing talent from a second mic off to the side. Everyone who was there from the beginning stayed to the end, and as the evening progressed, more people showed up. I could just imagine how much better an evening can go if you’re performing for a larger audience in that room.
