  1. Open mic at Derby’s takes place on the first and third Tuesday of the month. If there are five Tuesdays in a month, they will have open mic on the fifth Tuesday and then still the first week the following month. It is for standup only.
The place seats close to a hundred, but it’s only about eighty that have a good view of the mic, and even then, you will want to sit close to enjoy the show. The room has been going on a year and a half and is run by a gentleman named Justin. Signup is first come first choice. There are no restrictions unless children are present. This is a family place. Talent gets seven minutes.
The business is a full bar, and pints of beer are $5.25. To eat they offer a limited selection that includes hots dogs, wings, a couple sandwich choices, nachos and personal pizza. Surrounding the place are nine muted televisions. For entertainment they have three pool tables, the closest one to the mic being covered and not for use. The mic takes place on a platform stage that housed a mic and stool. The backdrop of the stage is mirrors. The only thing missing is the dance pole, it had that kind of look to the room. For parking, they have a giant lot.
The signup sheet came out at 6:30pm, and I signed up first, being , the only comic there when the sheet came out, taking the third spot. Justin came over and introduced himself to me. We talked for a little bit till a couple other people showed up and Justin excused himself to talk to them.
We intentionally got off to a late start, as Justin was hoping more talent would sign up. As it turned out, when the room started at 7:24pm we had three signups. Note: It was the Tuesday before the Fourth of July on Thursday. It might have affected the tides of standup open mics.
Justin went up on stage and welcomed everyone then did a few minutes of material. There were 13 people in the room, including the bartender. Of the 13, eleven were paying attention. I went up last, about 7:47pm, and performed to six persons. The evening did not end in that Justin announced that was the end of round one. Comedians who have gone up are welcomed to perform a second time, and comics arriving after round one ended can sign up as well.
Guys, I gotta say, I appreciate Justin’s enthusiasm, hosting this room, even if the attendance was not astronomical. He sat close to the stage, so it was easy to see the light. He paid attention to the performers. For the most part, so did everyone else. I did not stay for the second round, because I had a long drive. Justin told me that this room can attract a healthy turnout, and other nights, yes, like the night I was there, attendance can be scant.
I get that Hemet is out of the way of the mics in Los Angeles and Orange County’s Long Beach and Huntington Beach, but if you find yourself visiting the wineries in Temecula or spending the night in Riverside, this mic is worth a visit.
