Time Out shares a parking lot with other businesses. The room has been going on for five years and is produced by a gentleman named Gary and hosted by a woman named Amanda. This room is mostly music, but an occasional comedian is fine. The place is a full bar, and they also serve appetizers like onion rings, tator tots, quesadillas, wings and fries. Fried foods for the famished. Healthier selections included burgers, salads, a couple sandwich choices and even a wrap. While the business is quite sizable, only about 52 of the chairs can see the stage, and most of those chairs face the stage. And it’s a nice stage, too, with a very good sound system. Four TVs were already on as a backdrop to the stage, but they were changed to feature the open mic’s animated logo, “Vegas Acoustic Gold Open Mic”. Talent gets ten minutes, and there are no language restrictions. Gary arrived 7:30pm, and Amanda came at 7:42pm. The signup sheet came out 8:02pm. Ostensibly, the room is on an Honor System, but talent appeared “eager” to sign up. Amanda went around with the signup sheet, having talked to Gary about who showed up when. Based on that, she approaches you accordingly and you pick your spot. The business plays country music, but when the mic began, the music stopped and the talent varied in their music selection, so don’t be put off if country isn’t to your liking. Four mics are set up on the stage to accommodate performers in groups. We had nine signups by 8:30pm, and there were 16 people in the audience when we began at 9:03pm. Gary, Amanda and another gentleman opened with three songs then announced the first talent at 9:23pm. Music is played between acts, as it sometimes takes a minute or two for the talent to set up. The room goes till everyone has gone up, even if that’s 1am or longer. Don’t abuse that by showing up just before the last talent has gone up and expect to perform, but if you get there around 10 or 10:30pm, Gary will still accept you on the list. Guys, this is a good room to do. Ten minutes is a chunk of change on stage, and based on the reaction from the audience I got, they are very attentive and enjoy standup. But don’t show up with a group of friends. The venue wants to downplay comedy, but still allow an occasional comedian. Once you have a solid ten to give, I’d say pop in by yourself, maybe one other comedian friend, and do the room. For local comedians, suggest that to your friends. For visiting talent, Gary and Amanda run a wonderful room, and it should be on your radar when visiting Las Vegas.
