  1. Open mic at Cooper Museum takes place once a month on the first Friday, and, weather permitting, occurs outside on their patio. The business is in the name: a museum. I did not get much of a chance to see it, but what little I saw (on the way to the bathroom), it was very interesting. At the mic, however, outside, they sold $5 beers, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, hot dogs and more.
Parking is on the street. The signup sheet came out 6pm. The room goes from 7pm to 11pm. There are language restrictions, especially when children are present. Talent gets four songs or 15 minutes. After everyone has gone up once, talent in the same order may go up a second time with as many minutes. The stage is a nice one, I must say, with five mics, all well lit. Heating lamps kept some of the audience and the people on stage warm, but I recommend bringing a jacket.
There were 25 chairs around tables, all facing the stage. Not a bad seat in the room under the canopy. Anyone attending is there for the mic. The gentleman who oversees the open mic is Dave, who is president of the museum. Open mic has been going on over six years. A donation jar can be found by the concession stand.
All genre of talent are welcome. The signup sheet is a large chalk board, and talent on a first come first choice basis, writes their name in big letters.
The evening started at 7:18pm with 21 people total. “Acoustic Sage” which is a group of men who run the mic, opened with four songs, then I went up. From my POV, while scattered all over the patio, for the most part everyone was watching me, even those working the food and drinks.
Guys, this is a very good room to do. I took advantage of all the stage time, knowing the audience was enjoying my set. Yes, the drive can be a pill, especially if you’re coming from O.C. or the valley, but it’s worth it to do the room. Between the amount of stage time and how polite and friendly the audience is, you won’t have a jaded experience or anything negative to say about this room. Respect, however, that there are restrictions.
