  1. Signup for open mic at Brew takes place on Facebook, but some spots are reserved for walk-ins. By noon the day of open mic, the signup on FB was full. It was probably full sooner, but noon the day of the show is when I tried to get a spot myself. You may sign up on FB as early as Wednesday the week before. I showed up at 6:15pm, and other artists were already there. The show starts at 7pm. The first hour and ten minutes is devoted to those who signed up on FB. Then the next five slots are walk-in signups. I have to say it was more a feeding frenzy than an honor system when it came to signing up in person.
Signup after the slots open on FB are filled is first come first choice. Talent gets 10 minutes. All genres of talent are welcome. There are no language restrictions unless children are present, and the host made a point of saying no hate material. I think that’s a given.
Isabelle and Bryce run the room and have been doing so for eight months. There is no parking lot at Brew, but street parking is free after 6pm, so it’s not a problem. The business serves coffee and beer, and because it’s “Tap Tuesday” you get $2 off select beers. To eat they serve all-day breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and wraps, appetizers like deviled eggs and spinach dip, and some sweets. The whole place seats 40. There is no stage. A single mic is set up to one corner of the room.
I could have taken the last open mic spot, but I gave it to another artist. I have family in Sonoma County, and as often as I visit, I can do this room any time. Two “bonus spots” are offered in the event the room ends early or if they have any dropouts. Often, I am told, there is time at the end of the evening to get the bonus spots up. The room goes till 9pm, while the business closes at 10pm.
There were 21 people in the room when we started at 7pm. The signup sheet came out at 6:50. Isabelle welcomed everyone then went right into introducing the first talent. By 7:30 there were 28 people in Brew.
The room started kind of rough. A lot of the audience was not paying attention, and a lot of talking was going on. It started to relax, and people started to focus on the show by 7:40pm. Attendance stayed relatively high. By 8:30 there were 27 people in the audience, talent filtering in as the evening progressed – no doubt FB signups – and the audience for the most part was paying attention in the second hour. In that time there were multiple talents on stage, mostly musician/singers, but some comedians as well.
Guys, this is a good room, if you make the list. I strongly suggest signing up on FB and taking a slot in the second hour of the evening. Ten minutes is a good chunk of change, and from what I saw, they are quite receptive to comedy. Beer is inexpensive, and Isabelle and Bryce are very good producers. I didn’t particularly care for the feeding frenzy attitude of the artists – first come first served is loosely applied here -- but, again, if you sign up on FB, you don’t have to deal with that crud.
