Sunday Mic at The Hubb Bar And Saloon

  1. I wrote in my review of Tatuado that open mic at The Hubb is hosted by the same gentleman who does Tatuado, and that is Mike. Same rules apply: no language restrictions, no signup sheet (Mike just remembers when you came in), and you get five to 15 minutes. All genres of talent welcome, though they are known for music.
While not as big a bar as Tatuado, the smaller space made the room more intimate, that you were going to get seen even if people did not come for open mic. And that’s not to say The Hubb is a small bar. It seats about 41 who can see the “stage”, and the saloon also serves comfort food like wings, fish and chips and burgers. There’s plenty of parking on their lot.
There is no stage, just 3 mics set up in a corner, relatively close to the bar portion of the room. Based on the layout of the room, they picked the best place to have talent go up. Three muted TVs got little attention. People are there for the show.
The room began 1:05pm. Mike opened with his two other band members I saw the day before at Tatuado, and one additional musician who played the flute. The combination worked. Besides the bartender, my friend and I got to enjoy some quality music. Only at 1:25 did five more people show up, and two more by 1:35pm. Mike kept the room rocking, as people gathered around the bar and immediate tables to see.
Eventually, he brought me up, and thankfully, all went well, certainly better than at Tatuado. The audience could hear me, sitting as close as they were. Not a lot of distractions. One gentleman who sat right in the middle of the audience -- end of the bar -- could not stop laughing, often leading the audience in a chorus of chuckles. I very much connected with him, and he sat just in the right spot to affect everyone else. At one point I asked, just to verify, if language was okay, and even though I was told yes, the one joke I told that was R rated did not go over well. I stayed with the PG material. The laughs returned.
Guys, this is a room to be done. It’s only an hour and 15 away from Vegas and starts at 1pm. You definitely can do it and get back in plenty good time for other mics or any entertainment you have planned. Mike and his band are worth just listening to, but of course, go up. And 15 minutes is solid stage time. Like Tatuado, The Hubb is not used to standup. I was the first comedian they ever had. As such, you truly will be performing for a general audience, and not a roomful of other comedians. Be the comedian in an otherwise music-only venue. They’ll love the break, and you’ll love the feedback of laughter.
