Wednesday Mic at Naked City Pizza

  1. Naked City Pizza takes place in a pizza store, but no business goes on in that place during the show. Drinks and food are ordered next door: drinks can be taken into the “pizza room” next door, and food is delivered from the kitchen. The room has its own bathroom, so, thankfully, you don’t have to miss much of the show if you need to go.
Off the top, I have to say what makes this room work is the host: Victor. He went around the room, introduced himself to each new face, welcoming returning regulars. I think this guy is known in the Vegas comedy scene, running a second open mic on Mondays. Victor has been running the room for the last two months, but it’s actually been an open mic for over a year.
Naked Pizza shares a parking lot with other businesses, but they are mostly closed, so not a problem. The room seats about 33 but only 25 can see the single mic well, as it’s not set up off to one corner, but centered in the room, a picnic-type table and benches behind “the stage”. Since comedy is the only thing permitted, you don’t need a lot of room. Signup is first come first choice. No language restrictions. Talent gets five to six minutes, the light at one. There is one TV, but it is turned off.
This was another room I showed up way early. At the bar next door, one of the staff came over and unlocked the “pizza room” and I waited alone, occasionally being affectionate with a beer to combat the heat, till other comedians started to show. The signup sheet came out at 8:30 when Victor showed up. By 9pm, start time, we had eight signups. At its maximum, there were 15 people in the room. Victor opened with about seven himself then brought up talent one after the other till the room finished. Strictly comedy. Fast-paced.
Guys, this is a good room. It wasn’t just comedians waiting their turn. Some people attending were there only to watch. Mostly, even the comedians stayed to support each other. Victor was glowing with energy as a host, never abating, and he even bought a pizza and told the audience anyone who goes up can help themselves. I had two slices. This late into my first trip to Vegas, some of the talent I had met previous nights. So far, everyone has been supportive. I’m glad Vegas is that kind of town. Do this room. You’ll agree with me.
Some things should not stay in Vegas.
