Wednesday Mic at The Artisan Hotel

  1. The first thing you’ll notice about Artisan Hotel when you walk in – and you’ll say the same about the room the open mic is held – is how atmospheric this place is. Low-lit crystal chandeliers, dark paintings devoid of life and color, not adorning the walls so much as hiding deep secrets, a setting that would make the hotel in The Shining look like a romper room. This place reeks of Gothic, and I say that in the most complimentary way. The bartender even shared a couple ghost stories. I’m staying here next time I visit Vegas.
Parking is valet and it’s free. I told the valet I wasn’t a guest, that I was just here for open mic, and it was fine. Open mic takes place in Artisan’s full bar. A platform stage over a foot high and a single mic. Behind the stage, a mirror. Four muted TVs – one above the mirror – while on, didn’t distract from those performing. The room seats about 25, and the seats closest to the stage are big, comfortable leather chairs, a small side table for your drinks by each chair. Happy hour goes till 8pm, so drinks kept people happy. You can order fancy appetizers at the bar or food from the restaurant next door and they’ll deliver.
I arrived unintentionally early. Save for the bartender, I was the only one there. Periodically, guests of the hotel dropped in, asking for ice. William, who runs the room, showed up at 6:07pm. The signup sheet normally comes out at 6pm, and start time is 6:30pm. We got a late start, so we actually began 6:45. William opened with three songs then brought me up. I took the second spot, but no one took the first. Six other people signed up after me. There were nine people in the bar when the show started. It’s first come first choice. There are no language restrictions. Talent gets ten minutes.
This was a room of variety: William did some guitar; I followed with standup; the next artist did hip hop. Of all the talent, just over half did standup. By 7pm 12 people had gathered to watch or signup.
Guys, this room is relatively new. It’s inception was mid May, just two months ago. I’m confident this room will develop, given a little time. I enjoyed myself. The people intending to watch sat in those plush seats. Those sitting to the side at the bar thankfully sat far enough away that their talking didn’t impede the show. Williams runs a friendly room, opening it to all forms of talent. As diverse as the talent was, everyone supported each other. I suspect when word spreads in Vegas, this room will become a hot spot. It doesn’t have much competition the night open mic takes place, and ten minutes is a healthy chunk of time for a comedian. Do this room for the open mic, but consider staying in a room at Artisan when you’re in Vegas. The ghosts. . .I mean guests. . .will love to see you.
