  1. Parking is not a problem at Schoonerville, as they have their own lot. Inside, they are a bar that serves beer and wine only. To eat, they offer sandwiches, burgers, street tacos, pizza and various appetizers, even a couple desserts. The place seats about 87. Open mic takes place on a nice stage, visible to everyone, save for maybe 12 seats. A mic and stand and stool were all that stood in the center forefront. There are 12 TVs, nine of which were turned on, including a huge projector TV on the back wall of the stage, but it’s turned off during the mic. One pool table stood idle and unused. So did, temporarily anyway, a dart board.
Signup is first come first choice, and they are on the Honor System. There are no language restrictions. The room is for standup only, no poetry or music. It was never announced how much time talent gets, but in using my stopwatch, I averaged the comics got the light at five and a half.
The signup sheet came out 7:30pm. The server behind the bar remembered me, and made sure everyone knew I was second. We had four signups right away, and two more by 7:45pm. By 8pm we had 12 signups. I learned that night that during football season the room can start late, sometimes not until MNF is over. Two gentlemen, Aaron and Bryan, run the room, titled “Two Bozos Comedy”. The room has been going on a year and a half.
The evening started at 8:41pm. I was working on my second beer by then. BTW, it’s $8 a pint. A bit steep, but the food was reasonably priced. We had 17 people in the room, including two staff and our two hosts. In scanning the room, I could see three people not watching the open mic. Bryan opened with a few, then brought up the first talent. Upon finishing his set, Aaron went up and brought up the next talent, and the two hosts alternated with each comic. I ended up going up at 9:05pm, fourth on the signup sheet, playing to 14 people.
As the evening progressed, sure enough, attendance lessened. We had 12 people at 10pm, and nine people watching by 10:30. The evening ended at 10:37pm.
Of note: I was privileged to see someone making their debut in life at Schoonerville’s, so the room was quite supportive.
Guys, this is a good room to do. True, it’s on the outskirts of the greater L.A. area, but still worth doing. The hosts are friendly and keep the atmosphere of the room jovial and upbeat. Your fellow comedians are respectful of the Honor System, so if you’re there early, you’ll get to sign up early. The food is pretty good, as I had dinner to accompany my second brew.
Be aware of the day you choose to do this room. If it’s during football season, don’t expect the room to start on time at 8pm. However, again, if you want to get an early spot, you still have to get there early, which may mean a bit of a wait, especially if you’re not a football fan.
But do the room at some point. It’s all about numbers: two bozos are better than one.
