  1. Open mic at Redwood Café has been going on just over a year and a half. Parking is on the street. Four TVs show the talent performing from a suspended camera, so no matter where you sit, you can see the talent on screen if not on stage. Signup is 6pm and the room starts at 6:30. Talent gets three songs or 15 minutes. It is music and poetry only with the rare exception of comedy, and even then you have to be clean. That means both no foul language but also no adult material that could offend.
The café seats well over 50 people who can see the stage just fine. They have a nice, lengthy stage, very professional looking. A gentleman operates the sound system while the host and producer, Ron, introduces each talent from a microphone where they are sitting. Signup is first come first choice.
The café offers quite a selection: soups, salads, wraps, a kid’s menu and entrees like linguine with clams, fish and chips, fried chicken and stirs – vegetable, tofu, chicken or steak. In addition to beer and wine they also offer smoothies and juices.
There were about 20 people in attendance by the time I went up at 7:20pm. There is some noise coming from blenders turned on periodically, but it wasn’t really a problem. The room goes till 9pm. Important: this open mic happens every Monday except the first Monday of the month.
Guys, I had a great time. I did just over ten minutes of clean material, and the host appreciated the fact that I respected his rules. Hopefully, comedy will be more received here. The gentleman who operated the sound system thought I did great. Some audience complimented me as well. Know, however, people who show up are there mostly to hear music. Cotati is a small town in the wine country, but if you’re in the area, consider dropping in. Be sure to tell Ron that you’re a comedian and be sure to honor his wish of being clean. I would hate if some fool comic decided not to respect the room, giving Ron any reason to discontinue comedy forever. Other venues in neighboring towns also have open mic, and you may very well be able to plan a trip around them while visiting the wine country.
