  1. Gogi’s is an Indian restaurant that also serves beer and wine. Next to the business is a paid parking lot. They have one TV on, but that discontinues when the open mic starts. There is no stage or platform, and open mic happens in the furthest corner from the main entrance. The host is Dan Casamajor, and he has been running the room since August of 2015. He sets up three mics, and one of them is for him to talk into, which is located by the sound system. Mostly, the room attracts musicians, but all forms of talent are welcome. Signup is first come first choice. The room goes from 6pm to 8pm, and there are 18 slots available to signup. More slots are available, but if you end up putting your name after the eighteenth one, you may not get up at all if time runs out. Talent gets three songs or ten minutes. Language is okay, but just not too much of it.
I arrived early, about 5:35pm. The signup sheet came out at 5:52 and I took the third spot. While the business seats over 50, there were about 20 people in the room when I went up. Dan opened with two songs then brought up the first talent, a poet. The second talent sang three songs, and even though I had the third spot, someone else was brought up before me to do another three songs. I followed and was on stage about 7pm.
I was told they’ve had comedians before, semi-regularly, but the night I went up I was the only one doing standup. Even with a pleasant-sized audience of 20, I must confess I did not get many laughs so much as nods of approval. After my set, I think Dan thought I felt bad, so he commented that he thought standup was about the hardest thing any talent can do. That and a cappella.
I actually had a very good time. It was raining heavily, and I think that kept some people home. We even had a flash flood warning. I’m confident that in the warmer months, more people show up. There is a lot of open mic happening in and around Chico, at least on four days of the week that I know of. If you’re vacationing in the area, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to go up, depending on what days of the week you are there. But I recommend coming in the warmer seasons.
