  1. Open mic at Mama’s Medicinals – which is an organic tea business and not a pot dispensary – is run by a woman named Emily. She has been hosting the venue twice a month since April of 2016. All forms of talent are welcomed, but they are mostly used to music. To a much lesser degree they get some poetry. The night I was there, after a few musicians, they had a spoken word artist. Until I performed they had never had a comedian at Mama’s before.
The room goes from 7:30pm to 9pm, and, at 15 minutes per talent, there are only six available spots. The hours may expand as more people learn about the venue. Also of note, the venue may move to another night in April, 2017, so beware. Signups is first come first choice, and there are no language restrictions so far. The stage is a platform that held a piano to one side, plenty of room. The whole business is one giant room, so anyone inside will be able to see you easily. The room seats about 23, and parking is free on the streets.
The venue is very inviting. Emily offers tea, sweets and a party tray, and there is a suggested donation jar. She has a business partner who normally would supervise the treats, freeing Emily to host, but he wasn’t there the night I was.
I arrived at 7pm and was the first to sign up. By 7:30 there were eight adults in the room, one teenager, and five children and toddlers. There was no mic and no introduction. The first signup just started playing. By 8pm there were 20 adults. But while that was a good number, it was the kids that had me concerned. They were moving about freely while the adults conversed, and while music doesn’t require you to sit still and pay attention, standup kind of does. I considered not performing, but the youngsters settled down after 45 minutes, and when they settled down, so did the adults.
A spoken word artist went up just before me. Up till then, we had only heard music. Everyone had settled for the artist, and he had a very attentive audience. I think he went a little over his allotted time, but oh well. I went up after him, and thankfully, the audience remained attentive and polite. I kept the routine clean, of course, and still did fairly well, all things considered. Emily tells me there are not always children present. This isn’t a nursery.
Guys, if you’re passing through the wine country, Ukiah offers some nice vineyards, and when looking for a place to perform, stop in to Mama’s Medicinals. You get plenty of stage time, and the people are incredibly friendly.
