Thursday Mic at Go Lounge

  1. The Go Lounge is a drink hole, a full bar with lights turned low. Two muted TVs were the most glowing thing in the room. The mic is set up in one corner of the bar. No stage, no platform. But for the most part everyone can see the performer, wherever you sit. At the opposite end of the bar is a pool table. Space Bar does not have a parking lot. Street parking only. They do have a designated area outside in the back for smokers.
Dan runs the room, and has been doing so for over a year. Tonight, however, we had a guest emcee, Sandy. Signup is first come first choice. When I arrived at 8:50pm, three names were already on the signup sheet. I took the first spot, because I had a two hour drive home. There are no language restrictions, as Sandy was very good about demonstrating in her opening set. The venue runs till the last comedian goes up, so if you arrive late, even at the end of the evening – whenever that is – you’ll still get stage time. Talent gets 7 minutes with the light at 6. To bring atmosphere to the room, music is played when talent is introduced and when they get off stage. The place may be low on lighting but it’s high on energy.
I think this is a hot spot for comedians, a room devoted entirely to standup. There were 19 people in the room when the evening started at 9:18pm, with 15 names on the signup sheet. As the first comedian, tonight was a good example of “taking the bullet.” One drunk guy who sat closest to the mic gave me some static, innocently enough, I suppose, and when I addressed him with some clever line, he laughed and behaved. But a few minutes later he got rowdy, so much so that the bartender had to come over and tell him to be quiet. The positive energy in the room was not abated, thank goodness, and I finished my set, and the evening went on pretty smoothly, at least for the remainder of the time I was there.
Guys, give Go Lounge a go. It was recommended to me by a comedian I met in San Diego on a previous trip, who happened to be at Space Bar the night I went up. That this room gets repeat clientele, and from my own experience, this room deserves to be called a hot spot. The comedians were supportive. Certainly, the staff sided with the talent. I met Dan before I left, and he seemed quite likable, a guy who embraces comedy like you’d embrace a friend. Just like this room was recommended to me, I pass on that recommendation.
