  1. First thing I noticed about Rebel Bites is the difficulty in parking. It is street only. Give yourself some time. You may find yourself parking some blocks away.
Shy runs the open mic, has been doing so for almost two years. She herself did not play an instrument, nor did she open with a few minutes of standup. I think she runs the mic for the sheer enjoyment of being entertained, although her personality was sparkling and she did have fun introducing each talent. In that way, she was entertaining herself. I found myself warming up to her, so personable was she.
Talent gets six minutes. The room caters to all genres of talent. It’s first come first choice. I could see people were eager to sign up when Shy showed up, but for the most part everyone was on the honor system. Whoever was there first got to signup first and so on. Shy told me the material has to be PG, but several comedians said f**k, and the comedian right before me said f**king eight times without being reprimanded.
There is no stage. A single mic is set up to one side of the room. A muted TV plays above the stage, but the audience didn’t seem particularly distracted by the television. The room seats about 50 who can see the stage well. Normally, the room has a featured talent, but there was no one scheduled that night, so I can’t report at what time the featured goes on, or how much time they get.
Shy showed up close to 7pm. The signup sheet came out 7:02. There were ten people already ahead of me. I got the 11th spot. The room started late, about 7:13pm. Twenty people were in the room when we began. That number increased by five by 7:50pm. Over 30 were in attendance by 8:20. I was fortunate to go up about 8:10pm. I think I performed at the peak of the room.
Guys, this room is very good. Do it. Shy is such a delight. The room is supportive. People are there to either perform or watch. Anyone who shows up not for the show sits somewhere else.
The business serves comfort food like melts, sandwiches and burgers. If you like beer, they offer that too. The room starts around dinner time, so come with an appetite and make an evening out of it.
