  1. Open mic at Temblor takes place in a giant warehouse next door to the brewery that has the bar and a café-like atmosphere, a couple of TVs playing sports, also inside a giant warehouse. Needless to say there is abundant parking. You can bring food or beverages into the room where the open mic takes place, but no one under 21 is admitted there, so there are no language restrictions.
A young man named Chris runs the room, has been doing so for 11 months. A comedian himself, Chris’s motivation for running a comedy room is to get booked and help to get booked other comics for the brewery’s booked shows. Was told by Chris that managers look at open micers and if they like you, they will tell Chris and he communicates that to you and you go from there. Pretty good incentive, huh? Here’s more.
Signup is first come first choice. This room only does comedy. No poetry or music. Talent gets 5 but possibly 7 or 8 minutes. Chris offered me extra time because I was an out-of-towner. He does that for other out-of-town comedians visiting. Also, if there is a low turnout in signups, he’ll give talent extra time.
I arrived a little after 6pm, and Chris had already brought out the signup sheet. It was recommended when I signed up to take the 5th or 6th spot. Evidently more people come in as the evening progresses. Chris sets up collapsible, plastic chairs around these big tables, so seating is accommodating to any size crowd. Tonight we had 29 people attending when the show started, which was 7:14pm. By the time I went up there were 36 people in the room. The stage is a metal platform about 3 feet off the ground. You have a clear view of everyone in the room. To keep the place lively, music plays between talent, so there’s never a dull moment.
Guys, I had a terrific time. The audience is very receptive. They are definitely there to see comedy and they know it. Nothing else is offered. No one wants anything but to laugh. Chris keeps the energy high, and people were bringing in their dinners from the other room, and there’s an open bar where the open mic takes place. The comedians were pretty good about staying and supporting other talent, but even though the entire evening was over by 8:40pm, the room had thinned a little. Still, the attendance was good.
