  1. Peter Cutler runs the venue at Fiddler’s, one that has been going on for about 6 years. Plenty of street parking, Fiddler’s can seat 32 comfortably in one big room, and a second room where they offer coffee, tea and a remarkable display of bites to eat, ranging from salts (pretzels, chips) to sweets (cookies, fudge) and more. The stage was actually a portion of the room with a rug that had 5 mics. If you count the man who was standing behind the sound system, the night I performed there were 33 attending. My friend and I were the only two comedians that night.
Signup is first come first choice, but they divide the lineup sheet into two categories: music and other (comedy, poets, spoken word). The host then decides to mix the talent for variety’s sake, so the first half is not all music and the second half everything else, but after opening with a couple musicians the host knows to put you up first if that’s where you were on the sheet. Figure 9 to 10 musicians for every 3 comedians or poets.
Talent gets 3 songs or ten minutes. The venue runs till 9:30 or 10pm. There are no language restrictions unless children are present. Sure enough, there was a youngster or two in the audience. There is a $6 charge to perform, with some of those dollars going to local events. They offer coffee and there was a remarkable display of bites to eat, ranging from salts (pretzels, chips) to sweets (cookies, fudge) to healthy (carrots, broccoli) and more.
I must say how glad I was to have performed here. I was the first to go up, about 30 minutes into the evening, and it just rocked. I rocked because I got laughs. But everyone rocked because the room simply supported one another. By the end of the evening, the room was still packed. The applause never died down as talent after talent went on stage.
Tehachapi is not a town known for comedy. But if you’re passing through, either to or from Los Angeles, it’s worth doing this room. You will have a great time. Not just having a great set for the reasons I mentioned, but because the other talent have a lot to offer. This is a music town, and these people can jam, at times 5 musicians, including a pianist. Standup was well received. Both my friend and I did well. But while that pleased me on a personal level, I was just glad to be in such good company and talent for those few hours. (I even asked one of them, who incorporated humor into his music, if I could book him for my venue.)
