Michael Harmon has been running open mic at Rocket Shop for 2 years. It takes places in a separate room from the café, the stage being a platform in the middle of one side. Interestingly enough, this room had the audience lit and not the stage, though you could make out the comedian performing. It is a free venue, finished by 9:30pm. Signup starts 6:30, and it’s first come first choice. There are no restrictions, except it’s comedy only, and talent gets 5 minutes. They have a new host each week. There were 23 persons in attendance, probably 90 percent of them talent going up. There’s plenty of parking in their lot, and I gotta say their menu was pretty good, the portions of food would fill the hungriest of men, and the size of a large beer was about 20 or 22oz. Bakersfield is hot. Beer is not. As such, it hits the spot. In the room with the open mic, there were no TVs or anything on like in the main café. I had a very good experience at Rocket Shop. For a room full of comedians, they were very good about laughing when they heard something funny. Not just the usual nods of approval, or murmur’s like, “That’s funny.” There was genuine laughter. From the heart. I wish more open mics meant just for comedy could be like this.
