  1. Iguana’s -- home of the Burritozilla -- may be more known for their burritos, but no less should they be known for their open mic. Lindsey Leong runs the show, which takes place in a second room joined by a corridor to the first room, where you order your food and drinks. People in the second room are asked to leave, so it can be set up. When we came in there were rows of seats, 30 in all. There were two mics set up to one side of the room, which was the stage. No platform or anything. Still, when everyone is seated, they can see you.
The room is clean. No profanity. Comedians get 12 minutes; poets and musicians get 2 pieces or 2 songs. Parking is on the street or at a nearby lot. The room has been going on for just over 4 years. Music was playing in the first room, and it went on, not loud, for the first 4 performers. Then someone turned it off.
The evening started at 9:12pm. I went up first of seven sign-ups. It’s first come first choice, so I had to take the bullet. There were 10 people in attendance, including the host. However, as the evening went on, more people arrived. By 9:50pm there were 13 people altogether.
Overall, the room had a healthy mixture of talent and audience. We had a couple musicians, some poets, a few comedians, and one or two who were just there to see the show. Lindsey keeps the energy going between talent. A number of those attending were regulars, and I suspect those numbers are only going to increase. Also, if you are fortunate enough to get a later spot, you’re going to have a bigger audience.
If you’re touring the Bay Area, staying overnight in the southern part, consider burrito (dinner) and a show. ‘Course, you have to get there earlier than I did to get that later spot you’ll be wanting. Don’t worry, though. They’ll never run out of Burritozillas.
