Open mic at Aztec is run by Scott, who has been doing this for 4 years. Welcoming all genres of talent, he gives 15 to 20 minute spots at the beginning. But as the evening progresses, and more people spill into the bar, talent may get less time. It is hit or miss in this place, I am told. There are weeks when Scott can show up and there’s a line of talent waiting for the signup sheet, and then days, like the one I did, when only one or two people are waiting to signup. There was one person before me when I arrived just after 6pm. Scott came only minutes later. There is no stage or platform. When you enter the bar to your immediate right Scott has set up 3 mics. The area works out well, because wherever you sit, you can see the performer. The place seats about 37. The bar serves only beer and some soda when adults bring children. They do not serve food. However, right next to the bar is The Mexican Cuisine, whose food you are allowed to bring into the bar if you make a purchase there. Signup is first come first choice. I took the first spot because I needed to get to a second venue. There are no language restrictions unless children are present. They have 2 TVs on, and because it’s Thursday, though muted, football was playing. From my vantage point I could see a number of patrons watching the game on the bigger TV on the wall to my right. Other patrons, I’m pleased to say, were paying attention to me. Of course, during commercials, everyone listened. How sweet. The venue goes from 6pm to 10:30pm. There were 22 people in the room when I went up. I did about 12 minutes. Mostly this venue is used to music. Scott tells me they get about one comedian a week. By 6:35pm there were 13 signups. Based on the response I got, I could tell these people were not used to comedy. Several people thanked me afterwards, one telling me this was the first time in a long time they had seen comedy here. I won’t kid you. The TV on was a huge distraction. Whatever time of the year it may be, there is going to be some sport playing on TV while you’re on stage. But not everyone was there to watch the game. They came for the open mic, not just listening to music in the background during the game. They were on board for comedy, for entertainment. Go and do this room if you can. The amount of stage time makes it worthwhile. And it’s the first of two venues you can do in the area, which is even better. Go forth and be funny.
