I arrived late to Space Bar, about 7:15pm, only to find out the evening had just started. Rudy is the newest host of this open mic – this was his first week – but the venue has been going on for a year and a half. In the audience were nine people and on the platform stage when I walked in were six, although two of the band was on either side and not actually on stage. I did not hear any rules because I arrived late, but I did learn the pertinent information. Signup is first come first choice. The evening starts at 7pm and goes till 8:45pm. Talent can get as much as 20 minutes of stage time when the signup sheet is not too full. Mostly they get musicians, but the room is open to all forms of talent. Adult language is okay unless children are present. Some weeks the turnout can be bountiful; other weeks, well, it was like the night I went up. Although I arrived late, I ended up going second. I went up at 7:40pm, after Rudy and his friends ended their set. One other comedian signed up, and he went up after me. No one else had signed up. I did maybe 12 minutes, and the other comedian did even more. Rudy went up with his band after us, jammed some more, and then the evening ended. The business itself has its own parking lot. They serve beer, smoothies, coffee, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, desserts and they even had a vegan/vegetarian menu. The place has two TVs, only one of which was on and muted. The entire place seats about 48. One drawback: in order to get to the bathroom, you have to walk past the stage. As small as the performance area is, anyone walking past the show is going to bring attention to themselves. Wait till between acts before you unload. Overall, I liked this room very much. I must say, Rudy is full of energy, encouraging talent to tell their friends about his room. In as much as they are mostly known for music, I wound recommend to any comedian, especially those who live in the San Diego area, to drop in and do a set, especially if you can go on as long as 20 minutes! And since the audiences there are used to music, comedy should be a welcomed treat.
