Open mic at The Lost Bean is run by a young woman named Maddie Eckebrecht; she’s been hosting it for two months, though the venue has been going on for one and a half years. The location has a parking lot, and the room seats 26 comfortably. I am taking into consideration seats from an adjoining room who can see talent performing. In the second room, there are many more seats. The Lost Bean is two rooms: The second room, where open mic takes place, focuses on serving wine and beer. The first room, luncheon items like salad, humus, flatbread and coffee. Talent gets 10 minutes. Signup is done by first-come-first-choice. The area of performance is to the left of the entrance. As the time of the show neared, the room became packed. People were standing to see talent. Mostly they get musicians. Maddie herself is one. The ratio of music to comedy is 3 to 1. When it comes to material Maddie’s rule is, “Don’t be an asshole.” I’ve heard that before. It means when kids are present, keep it PG. I came early, gave myself the fourth spot. I had a second mic to go to, but I stayed as long as I could to support. I must say, the support in the room was strong. A number of the talent are regulars, and the people come out specifically to see them. I was fortunate to have such a huge turnout, and as infrequently as they have standup, I was well-received when my turn came. I don’t know why The Lost Bean doesn’t have more comics performing. They have been around a year and a half. Guys, if you’re in the O.C. area, especially the denizens of O.C., make a point of hitting this room. Yes, it was busy in there, and you are competing with the noise from the counter, but the people are listening. The audience pays attention. And it’s a pretty hefty size of an audience for a coffee shop. And the amount of stage time is a sweet number.
