  1. Open mic at Half Off Books is run by Raquel Reyes-Lopez, and she has been doing it for 1 year and a half. While the word poetry is in their open mic title, they accept all forms of expression, even music as long as its acoustic. But chiefly they attract poets.
Talent gets 3 to 5 minutes, and the venue runs from 7:30 to 9:30. There are no language restrictions unless there are children around. I am told the room can average 20 open micers, and the general audience even bigger some weeks just there to support. Also, you can bring in outside food and drink if you want.
I was the only comedian to perform that night. I think I was the only comedian they’ve had in a very long time. I did well, with one woman in the front row first giving me a stone-face look for the first 5 or 6 jokes then finally busted a gut and had to hold her stomach while she knelt over in her seat laughing. I had to stop my act and wait for me to quiet down.
Overall, I was pleased with the place. More so, because after my set the woman came up to me and told me what a messed up day she was having and so needed a laugh. Made me feel good. I thanked her and left shortly after. The drive home was over an hour, and I hadn’t eaten all day.
