The open mic at The Hideaway Cafe is run by Tracy, a guitarist herself, and she's been doing this for almost a year. Mostly this room draws musicians, followed to a much smaller degree by comedians. They've had 1 or 2 poets in all that near one-year run. Know that the first Tuesday of the month is devoted exclusively to comedy. There are a lot of stats to share, which is why in part you should do this rockin' place. Signup is 8pm; show starts at 9pm. Lineup is done by random draw, and then Traci posts in chalk the order on a board, so you know where you are. A featured performer goes up an hour into the open mic. They get 30 to 40 minutes. The whole evening finishes 12:30 or later. Talent gets 15 minutes on stage, and the stage itself is a wide platform in the corner. Plenty of room for the two mics that were set up. There are no language restrictions. TVs are muted before the show begins. Noteworthy: performers get a ticket worth $5 towards food or drinks. They have domestics for $2 and imports for $3. Also, tacos 3 for $4 and appetizers for $5 and can be ordered up to 1am. They offer sandwiches, burgers, even vegetarian food. I'm not trying to give the cafe a plug, so much as inform you of the crowd this place attracts because of these deals, and the benefits you get from performing here. I was having a blast, and the prices were outrageously reasonable. As for the actual stage experience, there were about 19 peeps when I went up, which was early. They loved me. A couple of the other comedians came up to me afterwards and congratulated me. Made me feel good. By 10:40pm there were 28 peeps enjoying Tuesday specials. By the end of the night it had dwindled to 16. This place is great. I don't often get compensated for doing open mic. I stayed till the end to support the room, since I had no other venues to do and the specials were ongoing.
