I had a really good time at this room last night. J-Dubs ain't the most professional host in the world, but he's a cool dude and he makes for a relaxed environment. When I got there, I thought it would be a tough crowd, but they were super attentive and loose and fun.
Just keep the window closed, guys! It gets too noisy in there! But, other than that, no complaints on my end.
There aren't a lot of open mics in Chicago on Friday. This is a great location, literally next to the Western Blue Line stop. The host is solid, you get 6-8 minutes which is rare for an open mic. The bartenders and staff are friendly, great drink specials, it's the place to be! And no, I am not a shill, I'm just a stand up comic that goes to a lot of mics!
If you are looking for an open mic consisting of a few jaded comedy veterans, who won't laugh at anything, then this is not the mic for you. The night I went drew a nice sized crowd, which was impressive given the snow. The crowd is a good mix of comics and non-comics: the non-comics made for a good audience and the comics were mostly attentive too. Comics were a mix of newbies and Chicago scene staples. The atmosphere is very friendly and supportive, which is largely attributable to the host, who keeps the energy up between sets and gives everyone an emphatic intro. And 8 minute sets are a big plus.
My only complaint would be the location of the stage, which sets the comic apart from where most people are sitting. And the speakers give off that feedback sound if you move, preventing you from remedying the situation yourself. This is a minor point that I hope will be worked out.
You're only standing in the front of the bar doing open mic to mostly only other comics, and its still fun. Theres also hipsters that don't laugh at anything even if you have everyone else going. But you know they're hipsters and you move on. The host didn't show up and another regular took over which only added to the fun.
This mic has kind of gone to shit. I haven't seen someone have a set that wasn't shit-to-mediocre in a long time, including some SUPER funny people. There are better open mics on Friday, promise.

ReplyDeleteWhy wouldn't a comic laugh? You'd think a comic would laugh before a non comic...?
