  3. This mic is beyond loose. It started over an hour late; the hosts did an extremely lazy session of "pass the mic" before giving comics the chance to do sets; etc. It is free, and if you're in the area it might be worth your time; otherwise I'd skip it.

  4. Nice, posting a bad review anonymously. It’s an open mic. You need to accept that if the hosts want to try out material, they’ve earned that right.

I’ve been to this mic once, and there were a total of four other comedians, so not quite an interminably long night. The evening starts off with two-minute riffs on a chosen topic, which is valuable extra time for honing those improv muscles. Sets were advertised as five minutes, but I wasn’t lighted for seven, and everybody else got this much, too. So maybe it is a bit loose, but you get what you pay for (in this case free). I won’t be going every week, but that’s just so I can perform in as many room varieties as possible; but I’ll definitely be returning.

Also, appreciated networking with the other comics and hosts before and after the show; there was no cliquey, holier-than-thou attitude here.

Finally, I believe the showtime does change occasionally (ie when the bar has a conflicting event), but Mie-me is very good about promptly responding to inquiries, so definitely touch base in advance.

  7. this mic could be better! the host means well by bringing in audience members. sunday is a tough day when competing with stand up new york. i would closely monitor this one. maybe a white host can liven things up in this cemetery. being more supportive helps too. trains were close enough for me to ride in.

  9. Host(s) are fun and they MEAN WELL. The space is great and clean. Turnout was light the night I went. That being said, the energy was up and the comics were funny; particularly the guy w/the dog*. He had a great bit about buying flavoured condoms. My only real complaint is about the CLUELESS bartender. I realise no one could give a shit, but I'm going back to this one.

*Dog was not part of act.

  11. tough room! you have to come to work! enough said. the host is a multi-talent. Lee Lee takes risks. I think we could all learn to take risks as he does time in and time out! He commits

  14. The host actually do the bookings for guest and some feature spots. It pays to go to the mic and work out.
I did 3 real shows in one week with their help. Hey if your funny then your funny! Guess the other guy's not hahahahaha!

  16. based on the posting that said "maybe a white host could liven up this cemetery!" i decided to check this mic out, honor black history month and killed three birds with one stone in the process! in addition, i re-learned its true the best things in life are FREE!

i found this mic to be the BEST open mic in the entire city and well worth the marginal transportation authority's effort to get there! If you really want to be a PROcomic, start to learn now PRO shows are rarely going to be in the same boro you live in and/or visit regularly......sometimes they require luggage, a boarding pass and a passport.

MieMie and LeeLee are what more open mics hosts should aspire to be like! About 16 comics-- all of diverse spectrums in the human race--were present, we each got about 4 minutes and maybe cause its Sunday we all stayed around to listen to each other's sets or bits.

The BEST part was LeeLee was booking talent for a Valentine Show that was happening after the mic. Two guys from the mic got booked for the show by attending a FREE OPEN MIC! What other mic does this?

I was one of the comics picked from the open mic to perform the Valentine Show and i learned a lot about performing standup tonite--its a 100,000,000 times better then performing an open mic and really gives you a chance to work on persona--this would not have happened without Mie Mie's and LeeLee's dedication to comedy and the comics who aspire, prespire and conspire to make real audiences laugh.

DEF an open mic worth the price of a roundtrip subway ride! A real comics open mic!

  18. To the last comment! The term ebonics was their way of making fun of those that talk the way they write! Any who, this is one of the better mics I've been too! A nice mixture of black and white comics, and other. An intimate comics atmosphere. the place boasts of at least 8 lcd screens. I'm telling you, you will not miss the sunday game, and you can do your comedy. The earl sunday evening champions for now!

  20. I went to this open mic for the first time last night and it was apparent to me immediately that this was going to be a good mic. One of the hosts - Mie Me - noticed that I was new and chatted me up right away which put me at ease before we even got started.

Since this was my first time at this open mic, I was a bit surprised when they started with a one minute "riff" on a variety of topics for all the comics in attendance. But the actual experience was great because being able to improvise on the spot is one of the skills any comedian should be able to pull out of their bag of tricks.

The actual open mic flowed smoothly and Mie Me and LeeLee kept it moving. They didn't hog the mic at all and were very generous with the time. There were more than ten comics there and each of us got about 7 minutes. Also, as someone pointed out above LeeLee actually produces shows and books comics from the open mic so this is one open mic that can actually turn into some real shows.

There were also actual audience members who were not comics, which can be a bit awkward for open mics but Mie Me and Lee Lee and several of the more seasoned comedians incorporated the audience members into the show by interacting with them. The non-comics stayed for the entire open mic which is kind of amazing when you think about it since everyone was working through their materials and the jokes aren't all polished yet.

Finally, I would also echo the observation that it is important to perform in front of a variety of crowds and this was definitely the most diverse open mic I have been to. There were Indian American, African American, West Indian American, Irish American, and Nigerian American comics. There were also quite a few female comics last night - which everyone pointed out was not usually the case at most open mics. The varying perspectives made for a wider variety of funny material and helped me to work on tailoring my performance to different audiences.

Overall a great experience, I will definitely be going back.

  21. The internet is a crazy place. I attended this open mic for the first time and I was honestly pleasantly surprised! Based on some of the bad comments, I thought that I might meet Satan and his minions and end up in comedy hell, but that, thankfully was not the case. What I did encounter was a pair of hosts and a group of great established and burgeoning comics who are supportive of the art of stand-up and each other. From the opening riffing round, to the possible interactions with other comedians in the audience, you have got to think on feet! It was great. AND it's FREE?! Are you kidding me?!! I will definitely go again. I would go even if there were a cover involved - but please don't tell the hosts or the venue owners I said that...

  28. Really happy I found this place cause it's so close to home. It's a good mic. I actually showed up about 45min late and Lee Lee came over to me and asked if I wanted to signup and then explained that everyone would be getting up at least once since there were so few of us. (maybe 12?) It's a great place to practice and as the other person commented there are people there from the club keeping an eye out for people for other shows which can mean more stage time. Kinda shocked there are any bad comments about this one. It was a good time.

Also, I was asked to do a show on the following Tuesday night and that was great as well. Packed room, standing room only and challenging to because the crowd had their keys ready to shake you off stage if you sucked. More shows need to impliment this safety valve because I think it makes us work harder and not just mail it in.

  29. Ha...just reread that... Lee Lee said we'd all get up at least TWICE. Getting up once, admittedly, is not much of an incentive.

  36. Hi everyone,

I just wanted to thank all of you who have left comments or shared your experiences about OUR mic. I call it OUR mic because I consider it the peoples mic. Judging by the comments the mic has gotten better and that is partly because of you guys. Some of you have made some great suggestions which we have implemented and they have worked!Keep on writing and creating. See you guys soon!

  37. Only been doing standup for a month and this is the best open mic in the two cities I've been to--New Orleans and NYC.

Most comics I find are either way to self-deprecating (where it feels less open mic and more suicide hotline) or cliquey and refuse to laugh at another's jokes (lest they reveal you're funny and they aren't)

Mie-Me had us immediately get on stage and riff on a random topic for one minute before our set. This is fantastic. It's like a comedy warmup and since it is very hard to come up with anything on the spot it is a great equalizer, cuts tension since all struggle before our real sets.

My favorite open mic in NYC so far, and it's free! Please check it out.

  38. This is a great mic with a supportive environment provided by a couple of great hosts. You get a one minute riff spot that is based off a topic from a newcomer. Then you get 5 minutes or so to do a spot. Even better, it's free! Definitely worth it.

  41. finally able to sit down and critique this place! I've been to 20 cities so far, this place is a barrel of laughs. almost every body is funny here. I'm a silent laugher, the guys here had me in tears with their subject matter. The host, this goofball named Lee Lee girates on stage alot, kind of reminds me of this clown my ma hired for my 8th birthday, I wonder if theyre the same people? maybe not. he's a nice guy though, more of a physical performer/news writer. a hot spot in my book seriously zaggat rated guys.

  46. Last weekend I trooped there from the BX, I got wind of this room from my dude Hashtag, he told me it was a dope mic and they reward the best set of the night with 25 DOLLARS cash money so I definitely had to go check it out...I went, and actually won the title from the reigning champ, not only that but I had a great time, the host was real cool, they let us riff to get warmed up which I thought was super raw because I've never been to a room that does that...Anyway I would def recommend this room to anybody looking to have fun and tell some jokes, and hey, you might even walk away 25$ bucks richer so bring the heat, or not, shit it's free so you can't lose!

  47. I am a beginner and I found this open mic to be very friendly, warm and comfortable.

Host Mie and Lee also did some act to build improv muscle. I liked the mic and the hosts.

Good networking with the comics after the session.

Also Lee Lee gives $25 cash price to the best comic and the mic is free.

I would recommend to other budding comics about the mic.
