  1. You're a struggling stand-up trying to make a living as a waiter. So do you really have $5.00 to spend for 5 minutes on stage in the middle of the week in front of a bunch of struggling stand-up comics making a living as a waiter led by a bald guy who tells the same sad, pathetic, laim jokes he was telling in high school in the early 1970's...every night...over and over and over? If you spend $5.00 to do an open mic at the HaHa Cafe, then you sincerely are not smart enough to make it in show business. I have some Ocean Front Property in Wyoming to sell you. Give me a call.

  2. disagree. this room is full of people who are newer to stand up and thus don't act like snob dickheads and leave immediatly following their set.

  3. never been because it's the only club in LA that makes you pay.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Avoid at all costs, newbies. $5 coffee for comics. Yikes!

  5. Its ok if you don't mind waiting long to go on stage and performing in front of few people and paying the 5 bones. Otherwise, go to a place a more rocking place.

  6. I've been. It's stage time. What comics need is stage time. They give you a beer. It's definitely not third world exploitation . If you want to just go do it....jump out of that airplane...This is a good way to do it.

  7. It was ok I felt the list was rigged with the regulars going on first, Some of the 10min sets where unbareable and boring, but not the clubs fault. Be prepared to wait and wait if its your first time not the best expierience iv had and the $5 charge only makes it worse. I would give it a 5 out of 10.

  8. Great place to start. Supportive host and comics.

  9. This place has a bit of a weird and sometimes depressing vibe. I feel like they have been more fair lately with the line up because now you see the host picking names out of the bucket. Augustino is a very nice guy. It sucks to pay to do an open mic but this is one of the 2 places where I go if I really want to practice a 10 minute set.

  10. Making comics pay for stage time is the lowest. If you are dumb enough to perform there, just know you are helping to kill comedy.

    ReplyDelete
  11. What a joke! (pun intended) You have to pay to play (that's bull!). Also, my brother who 1) doesn't drink alcohol and 2) doesn't drink juice because he's diabetic, was told that he HAD to pay for two drinks.

    WTH?!! Scam! Total frickin' scam!

If you're a newbie hit another stage or save yourself the $$$ and practice in front of a mirror.

  12. The owner is very sleazy. A friend of mine produced a show there and he took a greater cut of the door than was agreed upon. As for the open mic he stopped me from video recording my set and said the club will tape it with their camera and charge me $20. Seriously? $20 for an open mic tape? Plus the five dollars? Any way he can bilk you out of one more dollar and disrespect you at the same time he will do it. Take note most of the wait staff is male because he has a history of sexually harassing the woman out the door (female comics beware). Between performing the open mic here and a fiery white hot poker forced up your ass, driven through your intestines, and out your mouth - take the poker. - Brett Gilbert

  13. At the risk of sounding like a prude I have to say that I thought I had seen everything that can happen at open mics....nope. I won't describe how filthy and not funny the people who seem to want to be here are. (And I am hard to gross out) Depressing with a capital "D". Also, they make you wait forever if you aren't a regular.

  14. 3 lies in one name this place is to comedy what rape is to love

  15. This place is what it is and anyone who goes there expecting anything else is as green as a leprechaun. I mean in 2011 if you think doing the Ha Ha open mic is a good place to be at you probably think 80's metal is coming back full force. Jack's history with dicking over runners of good shows there is legendary and now it's basically becoming a bringer show club so grab your 10 worst enemies and have them come on down and watch you bomb in front of other open mic'ers friends!! When Lovitz is a better alternative than playing here really on anynight, well that about sums it up!

  16. dont beleive any of these negative people i go to haha everyday and its packed sometimes you cant get on bc it is a very supportive place with lots of oppertunities for comics to get up on stage. this is the university of comedy clubs the small $5 fee for open mic with a free drink is not a big deal when you think about all that the clubs gives back to comedy and comics

    ReplyDelete
  17. I host on Saturdays. Half the places in LA charge. And the big comedy clubs have a lottery system which can take months to get selected. The negativity on this post comes from comics who either aren't funny, broke or don't see the big picture.

Comedy is an investment. $5 is the cost of a soft drink/beer which you drink more than 3 times a week anyway. Why not spend it to work out 5 good minutes of material, network with some cool comics, have a drink and be positive.

The negativity in this business kills me. It's HOW you look at it folks. If you don't like the place, don't go. It has made me a better comic because of stage time and networking.

    Cheers.

  18. the ha ha is really coming along new carpet nice leather couches and great vibe. this is by far the best open mic in los angeles. as far as paying $5 bucks i didnt mind at all because you get a free beer what a kick ass deal.
and you get 5 full mins.
they also have open mic 7 days a week which in my mind is so vital. i know everyday i can at least get on stage for 5 mins.
thanks jack and everyone else at the ha ha

  19. You should never have to pay for stage time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If you're good then you won't have to pay for long. If you're not good then 5 bucks seems pretty cheap to learn the craft. I guess good comics don't complain about open mic nights anyways. I paid thirty to be in the contest, made it to the finals and then got spanked. I learned a ton and if I was good I would have made money. Don't blame the club if you suck.

  21. Went up a few times, loved the place. $5 keeps the doors open, cause Eddie Murphy ain't comin' tonight. Good place to practice, get your stuff together, and go from there. The business rewards the funny strong in the long run(and Dane Cook also, cuz he ain't either. If you are or do become funny, you'll get yours. Stop cryin', accept the business for what it is, and get funny. Unreal how spoiled and sissified some of these people are. 25 years ago, there were 2 spots in town, and now there's 500. If you got ANY game whatsover, you should have no problem within a year gettin' time anywhere, any night in town.

  22. Old School, you have no idea what you're talking about.

  23. HAHA Comedy club, booyah there is some good poon in that place too.

it's better than paying to park somewhere.

  24. I've gone there a bunch of times now and even though it seems like a shitty, small sleazy club when you walk in, it has a stage and people and that's all you need. practice. i don't mind paying, its a fair price for the time you get. it is pretty rigged with all the regulars going on first, that's the first 30-45 minutes right there. but when you go you know your gonna get to go up, and everyone there has always been nice to me. the biggest bummer is most of the comics there either aren't funny or don't take it seriously. a lot of looking at notes or being unprepared. its the only real open mic in the valley and they have it almost every night of the week. i'd be bummed if it went away.

  25. People!! Comics have been "paying to play" for a lot longer than you have even been around!! Reading most of these reviews, I think the majority of you should quit comedy and go back to 4th grade English class. Between spelling, punctuation, and usage, I am left to believe people aren't laughing at your jokes because you communicate like a retard!!!
    Great Club by the way,....

  28. Daddy, steve, DDR, Curly, and old school are all Jack's bitches. They have no clue how bad this place is because they are too busy gurgling Jack's cum for meager stage time. Fuck the haha and jack's loser dwarves who kiss his ass on an open mic review site to eek out one more minute at haha's pathetic open mics.

  29. I felt dirty after going there. You can;t even just hang out htere. You either spend money or they treat you like shit. No respect of r the talent that puts butts in seats. I'll never go back.

  30. HAte hate hate HATED this place!!! NOt fun at all!

  31. I overheard Jack, the owner, telling his employees to go on this site on write a good review. That's how BAD this club is - he has to ORDER the people he's paying to wipe up vomit to write a favorable review. Then he asked the comics in the bringer show later that night to do the same. He's BEGGING for FAKE good reviews. How fucking pathetic is this guy and his club???

    ReplyDelete
  32. Everyone in the comic scene knows the manager steals money from the owner and jokes from the open mics

  33. Worst club in all of LA. It's worse than Marty's, if you can believe it. Don't waste your time.

  34. The opposite of comedy happens here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've never had a good time there. I won't be back.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So... just so we're clear- everyone seems to like this place, right? Anything negative to report?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I came here, rocked it, was asked to come back, I didn't realize he wanted me back only on condition I bring a couple of shleps with me. And when I brought just me and my set, he refused to allow me any stage time. Go to hell rico.

    ReplyDelete
  38. They call themselves a comedy club but it's just like M-bar, every show is a bringer. the open mic is just like hollywood hotel you have to buy a drink to perform to only comics. You could call it Jack's Asshole and it'd be the same.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jack is a super douche. Avoid this "club"

  40. I havr been put om there weekend shows just based on how good i did at the open mic if your funny you will get booked ive been doing Comedy in LA for 2 years and i know if you are good and also EASY TO WORK WITH you will get BOOKED! PLAIN AND SIMPLE
    Great mic!

  41. This place is as bad as it gets!!! They owners record your show and the in-house coke-head comics steal your material. This is NOT a secret. Jack's useless wife is fully aware of the practice and she condones it!!! I live up the street from the HaHa and I will NEVER go back. Any comedy club that allows their in-house comics to steal material is not a club worth supporting I don't care what the space looks like or how nice Jack appears to be. Two thumbs down!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Set up a microphone in your home and invite friends.

  42. This place is complete and total garbage

  43. A lot of theft goes on here. Any joke you tell here expect it to be stolen by the "regulars" that work here.

  45. I was just there, from New York , did'nt know a soul, did the Tuesday mic, I thought it was great, the place was nicer than I thought it would be,$5 AND you get a drink, is a bargin in NYC, then Jack put me in the Sunday night show(I choose sunday) thought Jack and the staff were very nice, the guy is trying to run a business I saw NOTHING wrong here, next time in LA will def hit this place up again-Jeffrey Paul

  46. I Host Tuesday nights at the Haha,
I can honestly say this club has changed my comedy career, by providing a stage and a mic, 7 nights a week.
    A great place to go.
$5 gets u a free drink and guaranteed stage time.
They also have great food as well...
Any negativity you hear about the HaHa is untrue! The place averages 25 open mic comics a night and Jack provides a great environment for comedians to learn and grow!! I've known the guy for 2 years and he's a class act and a funny guy...
Come by any day of week and see for yourself...
People that talk bad about this club have no business in Comedy...
This place has built famous comedians!!... All the pictures on the wall speak for itself...
Don't listen to haters and people who have nothing else to do but bitch...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sean, how can your review honestly be considered accurate when you say the negative reviews are untrue? If you go on everyday on here and read the reviews The Ha Ha is literally the only club on here that has a 90% negative review rate. Why has every and I mean every promoter who's ever run a show here leaves in under 2 months? Because of Jack and the way he treats people. I'm glad you have found the place to be helpful but can 90% of the comics on here be wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sean, are you a relative of Jacks? A class act and a funny guy? I'm all about ass kissing to get ahead but don't you think that is a bit much? If he was a class act than this place would not have a 90% negative review rate and if it was such a great place Lovitz wouldn't have opened up right up the street out of fear of competition. Name me an A list comic who plays here and no I'm not talking about the 7th Wayans brother. My goodness, even Flappers gets semi big names to play there while the Ha Ha is stuck with B room headliners and show runners who can't get stage time anywhere else.

  49. I see Jack hasn't had an employee write a fake positive review in awhile, he must be slipping.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Jack is a great businessman in the since he knows that each week brings 10 more suckers from all over the country that he can manipulate for a few months or longer before they catch on to what a piece of shit he is. To the Ha Ha employees I mean people who post positive reviews here, why is it that 90% of the people who run shows there quit after a few months? #truth

  51. Gotta say the same. Seems like a bad place. Went there and they said they were full but come back at 11PM for the late show. Went in watched some bad comics that sounded lke they were auditioning for Nickalodien or to do childrens birthday parties. Then someone came in after me who they let on so I guess they were not full. I wore a suit and looked good, why they dd not let me on who knows. Saving a place for his budy who was late? Who knows who cares. Seems like just comics in the audience. Weird. Boring. Bad.

  52. I performed here a few times, and although the waiting process can be a frustration that defies performance description, the room aura and comedic contrast is quite an intriguing phenomenon. Aesthetically incongruent and filled with observational potentiality.

The stage ambience is filled with miscellaneous paraphernalia's, an abstract inventory for the cerebral observer, also the neon-ish colors and semi circle room is quite an encapsulating theme.

Multiple peripheral TV screens to pacify your narcissistic notions, a rarity in most open mics, and the furniture incongruity caters to a potential audience preferential taste. The room is astronomically spacious and comically inviting, and you can taste humor in the air.

My only pet peeve is the inability to perform in successions based on an assumed chronological system, I'm assuming it's a lottery, although it appears organizationally ambiguous in nature.

"Nevertheless" I've developed an overnight infatuation for this place and will continuing exploring its multifaceted polarity and overall unorthodox settings.
