It starts at 9, which can be a nightmare if your spot is number 12 or higher. Lottery system. Usually 3-4 minute sets. The room itself isn't too accommodating to comedy, since it's pretty much a long hallway with seats around the corner.
I don't NOT recommend it, though! Good last open mic of the night!
I went last night for the first time got lucky was in the first 5 and thought it was cool. Great supportive crowd and a host who didn't talk too much in between! What more could you ask for...oh and they had reasonably priced yummy sweets :-)
I think this open mic is great! it's later so you don't have to stop your day to get there and i like the stage it up high and put you on the spots which is good for stage fright and bombing it brings you right out of your shell and the people are supportive.
The WORST open mic in open mic history! It's a snake pit of horrendous despair. It's anti-comedy dark matter that will infect your very soul and vomit demons of dejection all over your set list... For the love of all that is decent and holy DON'T GO! - Brett Gilbert
Yeah, it's just a shitty, shitty room. Pretty cool coffee house, but the comedians are usually bitter and no likey laughing. Beginning comics -- stay away.
Or at least, if you do go up, have them play Guns and Roses, "Welcome to the Jungle", as an introduction.
A.P., or anybody, don't waste your time here! Went there last night and it was HORRIBLE!! Host was nice enough, but he forgot to call my name and I was already 25 of 30 comics. My set was so late, most people had left and the people left were half asleep or drunk, plus it's like a double-wide outhouse with uncomfortable seats from the 1800's! Throw a dart at any other open mic spot and you'll do better than this place! If you're new, go to The Spot or The Downtown Comedy Club (when they have an open mic) they're WAAAAAAY better. I hear the Hollywood Hotel is good too, going there next week.
Aw man. I used to go here all the time. It was GREAT if you were picked <15, but if you were later than that you might as well just leave. Now that they're charging hardly seems worth the risk.
This review is for the WEDNESDAY OPEN MIC: Do not bother going. It's hosted by this guy Michael. It was supposed to start at 8pm for sign ups and 830 to start. It began at 945! I swear he was organizing chairs for an hour before he put out a list. When we did sign up, Michael asked for a $2 donation. The place is not that big and the chairs were pretty much set! Then when he finally started he talked for a long time. Then they do this thing where he goes out into the crowd and asks people to talk about positive things for a bit. By then I had it. Keep my $2 because it's not worth hearing your voice, Michael! I came there to watch some friends do some stand-up, but thanks to Michael and his loony ways, I will never go back to this place. BTW, if you can't tell, Michael is a complete tool. Beware of this place. He told me he was trying to get another night..
Pat Reilly, Queue & Nosmo King are wonderful hosts and humanitarians. This is probably the finest open mic in the history of standup comedy. It is worth your time.
well i went and there were live fucking snakes just crawling around hissing. Ok cool I can deal with that but then I ordered water and there was a fucking finger in it. WTF This place is a drag..Cute chicks though..

ReplyDeleteThe open mic of Fridays is Musicians only. Comedy open mic is on Thursdays. Found this out the hard way.
ReplyDeleteI can[t believe they force you to pay $3 for the worst experience of your life.
ReplyDeleteThey're CHARGING to perform here now??? Next you'll have to bring 5 people for 3 minutes. Stop doing venues that charge comics, people!

ReplyDeleteThis open mic is not (and has never been) a pay mic.
