Mix of music, spoken word and comedy. There's an audience, not only performers. It's outside in the warmer weather, which is great. Very welcoming group of people of all ages. Get there early to sign up! Checkout their web site: http://www.spreadthesoap.com/
Probably my favorite open mic. Very welcoming and fun atmosphere. Plus, the crowd actually listens. Get there early and ask for Jason to get a number for the sign up.
The show is called "Soapbox Sessions" run by Jason Brain, Roges Chagnon and Kelly Lovell. The sign up list at 6:30 is printed out like so: poet, musician, comedian, poet, musician, comedian... etc. If you get on their email list they will email requests to perform and if you respond you don't have to sign up in person. Show runs from 7-10pm. It's PG, according to Jason, and as the night goes on they relax even further, but if little kids wander in then it's back to PG. Musicians get 2 songs, poets and comics get 5-7 minutes. They have a stage (plywood resting on 6 egg crates), two microphones, a plug in for guitars, and a decent sound system. They surround the stage with chairs and the place is usually packed. It was a full house all the way to the end of the show the night I performed. The crowd a mix of various performers and very respectful; most of which stayed even after they have gone up. A nice break from the standard all comics crowd. They fund and run the show on their own so they pass a donation bucket around and I dropped a dollar in. After the show they have an "all are welcome" game of basket ball in the court just outside the shop. Get in a gig and a work out. Good vibe, good people, good show. - Brett Gilbert
If you are stand up comics, DO NOT waste your time going here. Good place for musicians and poetry reading and I waited more than 3 hours to get on the stage along with several comics. we were all waiting more than 3 hours so I walked out finally without performing 5 min on stage. Let's talk about stage.. a small piece of wood piece that was holding on top of the plastic crates. Good luck not to fall off from this unstable fake stage.
The host name Jason Brain is a douche bag/little weasel. I email him first and he said if first five people respond to his email will be put on the waiting list to perform. Everybody has to sign up at 6:30pm at the coffee bean. I showed up at exactly 6:29 to sign up and found out this douchebag had been accepting people to sign up since 4pm without telling new people? Talk about being fair right?? Who does that? of course by the time I showed up (exactly 6:29pm) the list was long yet I saw NO list what so ever..weird.. Finally, I saw him making the list and he was filling people's name on the list. This weasel was having return people to go ahead of you. I had the worst experience and this was my first and the last time I will show up to anything this Jason Brain will be hosting. People were nice but this douche bag I'll give thumbs down..Way down.
Yeah...this is to the Feb. 24 comment. This is one of the best open mics in town. I'm not sure what you were expecting...but he puts people on the list in the order they come in and talk to him. I came in that night around 6 and he put me on the list accordingly. There is no unfair bumping here. It's first come first serve. That's how it's advertised. And as for Jason being a douche...are you sure you were talking to the right guy? Jason is one of the nicest guys I've met. He's respectful and fair to EVERYBODY. He runs a great, super positive show. That is way more than you could ever hope to expect from 75% of open mics and their hosts in LA. You had to wait a couple hours at an open mic? Have you ever been to an open mic? That crap happens all the time, usually to a much worse extent. Get over yourself. And about the stage...yeah, it's pretty much a piece of wood and some crates, but it's stable and works just fine in those close quarters. Maybe if you hadn't walked out early you would have been able to accurately judge its stability by performing on it. Anyway, it's a good place for musicians, poets, AND comics.
