Good open mic. A real stage and awesome sound system. They give you a drink as well. It's a lottery. It does tend to attract many first timers, though.
It is NOT a good stage. They do NOT give you a drink - you have to BUY one to perform, dipshit. It is NOT a lottery, they put up 10 employees first THEN their friends. Fuck this shithole in the ear. The above comment is obviously fake from one of the people who work there. Those losers need new comics to keep showing up so they have someone to fuck over and perform to and steal jokes from.
It's like a cult. The comics that work there are blinded by how horrible Jack treat them and other comics. They drank some cool aid that makes them oblivious to how bad it is and how negative it's effecting their own comedy. Beware the open mic will upset you and don't believe the lies if they ask you to work there.
This is Mr. J. I will not comment on Jack, I think we all have our opinions on him and I don't like to attack nor add anything to the fire. However, I had only been there for the Open Mic. one time and I must say it was enjoyable. The MC Mike, was not only friendly but supportive of the other comics. Sure there is a $5 to perform but you have to support the room plus you get a drink with it and 5 minutes unless your Mr. and Mrs. Moneybags, then you can pay $10 and get 10 minutes. You have the option of paying for recording your set $20 by them or $10 to record yourself. Pretty straight forward. Not bad for a Monday Open Mic. The comics were at least supportive with me and I to them. If you hear a funny joke, let them know... by laughing.
One time, while waiting for my turn, I went outside to put a quarter in the meter. The owner... I think it was the owner (guy with a ponytail?) burst out after me and encouraged me to stay and buy a video of my set. I tried to explain to him that I was just going to put a quarter in the meter, and that I would be right back, but he couldn't seem to hear me (perhaps because people have ducked out on him before??) and kept proceed to pitch me various things I could buy (videos of my performance, tickets to a bringer show, entrance into his comedy contest) ... I had to just cut the guy off and just say LISTEN DUDE I AM JUST GOING TO PUT A QUARTER IN THE METER AND I WILL BE RIGHT BACK TO PERFORM AT YOUR OPEN MIC. I DON'T WANT TO BUY ANYTHING FROM YOU.
But I told myself I would never ever come back here to do a mic.
It just feels like a hustle. But with no shortage of new comics in LA, I'm sure they do just fine, shaking them down one by one.
Came here a while ago and tried to do some jokes, but before I went onstage some man in a robe came up to me and handed me a piece of linen with a weird rune on it. He was mumbling something about old gods? And then nobody in the room would acknowledge that I was there. I went back to my apartment but my roommates claimed that I'd never left.
Jack is what he is at this point in 2012 and if you are desperate enough to deal with him then good luck getting scammed by him. I mean how many club owners tell people who run their shows their to come on here and write positive reviews? When 80% of the reviews on the Ha Ha are negative that says it all and the other 20% that are positive are people that he's basically threatened to write a good review on here or don't perform at my club again. It's not the paying $5 that sucks here, I mean the guy is in a business to make money but it's the other stuff like his scam comedy contests and shitty bringer shows that suck. I mean look at over the last 5-6 years and you'll notice that every person who ran a show there left because of Jack's shady business maneuvering, that's no accident but people who are complete suckups continue to go there so good luck in the future on that.
I think The Ha Ha is the best comedy club in the country and Jack is one of the most honest and sincere people I've ever met in the business. Any place that has multiple pictures of Dean Del Rey on the wall has to be a A list club.
I've known Jack for 10 years. He's been a slime ball from day one and you can see it all over his face. Having said that, it's a stage to work out material on and get used to having your nuts kicked every time. You get tough. You grow a pair and you stop whining. Comedy is not for the faint at heart. Use the stage and hone your material. Who gives a fuck if Jack is a douche? Pay the $ and do your time. Either that or work an open mic competing with a pool table, ESP on the big screen or video games sounding off in the corner. You decide.
I performed here a few times, and although the waiting process can be a frustration that defies performance description, the room aura and comedic contrast is quite an intriguing phenomenon. Aesthetically incongruent and filled with observational potentiality.
The stage ambience is filled with miscellaneous paraphernalia's, an abstract inventory for the cerebral observer, also the neon-ish colors and semi circle room is quite an encapsulating theme.
Multiple peripheral TV screens to pacify your narcissistic notions, a rarity in most open mics, and the furniture incongruity caters to a potential audience preferential taste. The room is astronomically spacious and comically inviting, and you can taste humor in the air.
My only pet peeve is the inability to perform in successions based on an assumed chronological system, I'm assuming it's a lottery, although it appears organizationally ambiguous in nature.
"Nevertheless" I've developed an overnight infatuation for this place and will continuing exploring its multifaceted polarity and overall unorthodox settings.
I'm sorry but Jack sucks and there is a reason why NO big name comics go there. They either go to The Improv,Comedy Store or Laugh Factory and please don't tell me the 8th Wayans brother is a big named comic. Like someone else said, if the Ha Ha was seen as a such a great comedy club and Jack a great owner Lovitz wouldn't have opened up right down the street. Jack is nothing more than a 2 bit Jamie Masada but with less tact if that's even possible?
This open mic and every openmic at this place is horrible.
